“Mutually Exclusive” is the chance encounter of two men who are perhaps as different as their hats. Not unlike figures in an Edward Hopper painting, they stood side by side for a moment, waiting for a traffic light to change in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. The “Mutual Life” sign on the building describes the antithesis of what I’d seen. This image received an award of merit from the Allied Arts Association of Richland, Wash., and first place from the Northwest Cultural Council of Palatine, Ill., and was selected by juror Christopher James for the Smithtown Township Art Council’s 29th Annual Juried Photography Exhibition at the Mills Pond Gallery in New York.

“Mill Pond Ruins” was taken at Discovery Bay, on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Most of this structure has since collapsed.

“Window on Klickitat” was shot through one of the original windows of Port Townsend’s Customs House (post office), built in 1893. The ferry M/V Klickitat was built in San Francisco in 1927. She served the Port Townsend-Keystone route until November 2007, when all four Steel Electric ferries were abruptly retired due to concerns over rusty hulls. The dreamlike feel of this image is not a Photoshop effect but the result of a window pane that is wavy as well as dirty.

“Ferns” was taken in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle. It’s the rear of the second story of an abandoned building next to the Highway 99 Viaduct.

“Anything Will Help.” It’s interesting to watch passers-by react to homeless people; most avoid eye contact for whatever reason. Very few people offered to help this woman just days before Christmas in 2007.

“No Sugar” shows an antique sugar dispenser, the kind you might find at a diner. “Job Rated” is an old truck door in Oakland, Calif.

“Condensation” is a macro image shot at the Pearl Bakery in Portland, Ore. on a rainy Sunday morning. You’re looking at the droplets on the near side of the window pane, though they sometimes “pop” and look like craters instead. This image received the Paul Conklin Memorial Photography Award from the Port Townsend Photography Club in August 2008.

“All American Grill” was photographed with a fisheye lens in downtown Port Townsend. This old Dodge truck belongs to David Vane, a local artist.

“Ode to Edith Macefield” tells the story of a woman in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood who turned down an offer of $1 million from the developer of land adjacent to her home. The large image shows Edith’s house through a nearby building being demolished in 2004. The two photos in the upper left corner were taken the same day. At right are two “after” images. Edith died at home in 2008. In July 2009, the home was sold to a man who calls himself a “motivational speaker.” He plans to make it a three-story building for his business.

“Light at the End of the Hoh Rain Forest” was taken in Washington’s Olympic National Park. As soon as you step inside it, the ferns, moss and trees create a very surreal feeling, unlike other forests. When you step out again, it can feel like you’re returning from a fantasy world.

“SAVE” is a roadside scene during an 11,000 mile journey from the Olympic Peninsula to the delta blues country and back.

“Smoke Break” is one of those day-in-the-life images. These three men (look closely to find the third) are taking a break from the restaurant where they work in Seattle’s Pioneer Square

“Boat Haven Invasion” was taken at the boat haven at the Port of Port Townsend, looking over the Larry Scott Memorial Trail toward Port Townsend Bay. These “aliens” are movable stands used to support boats hauled out in the boat yard.

“Bulldozing the Homeless” depicts changes made to Seattle’s Occidental Park in 2006. It was a misguided attempt to discourage homeless people – including those from two nearby shelters – from using the park by removing trees and replacing historic cobblestones with pavers. Nothing has changed except the park is not as attractive as it used to be.
